In the past, the traditional high pressure gas discharge light source (HID), such as high pressure sodium lamp (HPS) and metal halide lamp (MH), is the main force of tunnel lighting. The tunnel lighting scheme requires a high minimum illumination to provide a safe environment for users. Lamps must be able to provide high levels of illumination at a considerable distance from the plane, the typical installation height of highway tunnel is 5-7 meters, providing clearance for high side vehicles.


HPS and MH are attractive to tunnel lighting scheme designers, providing low unit cost and high illumination. they usually each lamp power up to 400W, to meet the requirements of illumination.


However, the disadvantages of HPS and MH are obvious. These two kinds of lamps consume a lot of energy, usually light quality is low, cannot provide uniform illumination in tunnel, and if occurrence breakdown, need costly maintenance plan to undertake remedial. High pressure sodium lamp (HPS) tunnel lighting cannot provide consistent illumination level and poor light quality.

Now, with the development of LED technology, tunnel operators have a new option, attracting more and more people from the public and operational perspectives. The most obvious advantage of LED tunnel light is their long life and high efficiency

1, In the typical tunnel lighting application, the high quality LED lighting system can provide more than 130LM/W. Since LED is a directional light source, its optical output can be accurately transmitted to the required area, providing additional system functions compared with the HID system.

LED tunnel light also can enhance light control in transition entrances and exit areas to make drivers' eyes more adaptable. The traditional high pressure sodium lamp and metal halide lamp are designed to simulate the illumination level of the whole lighting, and to close some or a whole section of lamps in one day according to the external illumination level.

In order to achieve the desired level of tunnel entrances, high pressure sodium lamps and metal halide lamps are usually too bright, and LED tunnel light use dimming to precisely achieve this level.

If it is the HID to match the light level outside the tunnel, it will appear for most of the day, the brightness is too bright, and it is far from the required lighting level. The main reason is that HID light cannot be controlled accurately. In contrast, LED tunnel light is fully adjustable and can match the required lighting level precisely to eliminate excessive lighting and reduce energy consumption.

Since LED tunnel light is very durable, they usually do not break down like HPS or MH lamps, so they do not need to close part of the tunnel and erect a high level platform to keep the road open.
